Creating Content Types

Before you start

Have a think about it first. Decide:

  • What it holds: blog posts? products? team bios?
  • What you need to fill in: text, numbers, dates, photos?
  • Whether it needs photos or files: will each one have a picture attached?
  • Standard or linked: does this need to point at another kind of content?

Set one up

Open the Content page

Tap Content in the bottom navigation bar. You will see what you already have, plus a New Content button in the top right.

Tap New Content

That opens the setup dialog.

Give it a name

Name it after what it holds, like "Blog Posts", "Products", or "Team Members". Someone else on your team should be able to guess what is inside from the name alone.

Names have to be unique within your group. You can rename it later from its settings.

Choose standard or linked

Two options:

  • Standard: each item stands on its own. This is the right choice nearly every time.
  • Linked: items here point at items somewhere else. Use this when things belong together, like a "Categories" list that your "Products" refer to.

Turn on photos and files if you need them

If each item will have a picture or a file attached, switch on Has Media. That adds an upload area to every item.

Save

Tap Create. You land on its detail view, where you can set up the fields and start adding items.

What to do next

Once it exists, you will want to:

  1. Set up the fields: decide what you fill in each time. See Content Fields.
  2. Add your first items: see Adding and Editing Items.
  3. Show it on your site: your website reads from this automatically, so anything you add appears.

Changing it later

You can adjust things from its settings panel:

  • Rename it
  • Archive it, which hides it from the main list without deleting anything
  • Add tags to keep things grouped
  • Choose which columns show in the list view
  • Set a label for display

Deleting is permanent, and only possible once it is empty. Delete the items inside first, then delete the type itself.

Next steps

Now that it exists, set up its fields so you know what to fill in each time.
